Lefthanded

about

This song was written about 3 years ago. While writing music, lyrics, or poetry in an office at work I glanced down at my left hand. I'd always had the thought that I was supposed to be left handed. Both of my aunts on both sides of the family were left handed and I've had muscle problems in my right hand that sometimes make writing painful.

The topic reminded me of a left-handed friend from college who told me she'd gone to Catholic schools most of her life where nuns forced her to write with her right hand. For years some people thought being left handed was associated with evil as it was a deviation from the "norm." In fact, "sinister" is the Latin word for left-handed.

"Left-handed" struck me as an all encompassing metaphor for people born one way and forced to change to fit "norms" and shamed for wanting to discover and express their true identities.

This song has sat in my computer for three years and never made it onto any of my albums. I always knew it should be saved for something special. I wrote this before I ever played a live show and was still making my music in Ableton with live drum recordings.

This song is dedicated to the LGBTQ community and anyone who has been forced to live a way contradictory to their true selves. All proceeds will go to Girls Rock Austin who seeks to empower those who identify as female, non-binary, and trans through music.

lyrics

Some were meant to be left handed
Some think they should reprimand it
They are making up commandments
Without care to understand them

Some say that if we just pray it
Maybe they can try to play it
They're so busy trying to save them
Can't see their the ones need saving

Some were born the upper-handed
They are seen as the upstanding
Now they say we're so demanding
For asking for some understanding

Some were meant to be left handed
Can you try to understand it
Some were meant to be left handed
Can you let them be left handed
